Areas of Expertise
My areas of expertise center on educational equity, public policy, and transformative leadership. As a scholar and academic leader, I have focused my research and practice on the intersections of race, power, and policy in both K–12 and higher education systems. I draw from interdisciplinary frameworks—particularly in educational administration, sociology, and policy analysis—to examine how inequality is constructed, sustained, and disrupted in schools and universities.
I have published widely on issues related to school choice, privatization, and high-stakes accountability, with a particular emphasis on the disproportionate impact these policies have on students of color and low-income communities. My work critically interrogates charter schools, vouchers, and testing regimes, often bringing a civil rights lens to contemporary education debates.
In addition to my scholarly work, I’ve served in seven academic leadership roles, including provost, dean, and director of doctoral and master’s programs. These roles have deepened my expertise in leading institutions through equity-driven change. I have advanced inclusive excellence, strengthened shared governance, and implemented strategic initiatives that improved outcomes for faculty, students, and communities.
I also engage extensively in public scholarship and advocacy. My blog Cloaking Inequity—which has reached over 1.5 million readers across 200 countries—translates research into accessible insights and calls to action for educators, organizers, and policymakers. Whether through media, testimony, or grassroots engagement, I view scholarship as a tool for social transformation.
Ultimately, my work is rooted in a commitment to justice and a belief that education should be a force for liberation, not oppression. I seek to contribute research, leadership, and advocacy that challenge structural barriers and reimagine what is possible in public education.
